Professor i marin ekologi och föreståndare för Tjärnö marina laboratorium
Jag är evolutionsbiolog och min forskning handlar om att förstå vilka biologiska mekanismer som leder till ökad biologisk mångfald och till nya arter. Jag använder marina organismer som studieobjekt, främst strandsnäckor men också bl.a. tång och sjöpungar.

Forskningsinriktning
Allt sedan livets uppkomst har populationer och arter förändrats kontinuerligt och med tiden bildas ny variation inom arter och även nya arter. Redan Darwin hade tankar om hur artbildning går till, men fortfarande idag förstår vi inte väsentliga steg i denna process.
Artbildning har tidigare ansetts ske mycket långsamt och vara en följd av storskaliga geologiska processer som avskärmar populationer. Min forskning visar att reproduktionsbarriärer kan uppstå mycket snabbt (tusentals år) och utan att fysiska barriärer skiljer populationer. Att förstå vilka mekanismer som driver uppkomst av ny biologisk mångfald är viktigt i tider av stora mänskliga ingrepp i naturen som orsakar att arter och bestånd går förlorade i allt raskare takt. Min kunskap om marina ekosystem och marin naturvård använder jag också för att svara på frågor som rör biodiversitet, miljö och naturvård i våra hav. Jag sitter i styrgruppen för lokalförvaltning av ett kustnära fiske (Samförvaltning norra Bohuslän), och i den lokala delegationen som leder vår enda marina nationalpark (Kosterhavets nationalpark), och jag har till och från olika expertuppdrag för nationella myndigheter och för regering och departement.

CeMEB - Centrum för marin evolutionsbiologi (2008-2020)
Ett Linnécentrum för forskning kring hur organismer förändras när omgivningen ändras. Finansierade genom bl.a. ett Linnébidrag från forskningsråden VR och Formas.

EU forskningsprojekt finansierade genom EU programmet BONUS. Fokus i båda projekten var genetisk biodiversitet hos marina arter i Östersjön.

MARBIPP - marin biodiversitet, mönster och processer (2001-2006)
Programmet undersökte hur fem viktiga kustnära marina biotoper fungerar med avseende på de processer som påverkar biologisk mångfald. Programmets resultat redovisade bland annat på en hemsida för avnämare: www.marbipp.tmbl.gu.se/
EUMAR - ett europeiskt forskningsprogram om genetisk biologisk mångfald (2001-2004)
EU finansierat forskningsprogram om kustnära marina arters genetik. Arter som studerades i programmet var havstulpaner, skålsnäckor, strandsnäckor, sjögräs och brunalger.
Jag är för närvarande partner i följande internationella projekt:

ERA-net projekt om brunalger. Projektet studerar effekter av klimatförändringar på Europas marina skogar av kelp och tång.
