Ernst studerade sociologi vid Durham universitet i England. Han har haft forsknings och undervisningsanställningar vid universiteten i Durham, Central Lancashire och Edinburgh i storbritannien (1989-2006), och kungliga nederländerna vetenskapsakademin (2006-2010) och Groningen universitetet (2009-2013) i Nederländerna. Under vårterminen 2017 var Ernst gästforskare vid centrum för socialteori, Gent universitetet (Belgien).
