Docent i statsvetenskap, lektor.
Sundström har två större forskningsintressen; 1) förhållandet mellan korruption och möjligheterna till en effektiv miljöpolitik, särskilt i låginkomstländer och 2) studiet av politisk representation, med ett fokus på kvinnor och ungas frånvaro i institutioner (som parlament, regeringar, samt lokala församlingar).
Förutom ett fokus på jämförande politik så har han bred erfarenhet av datainsamling i Sydafrika. Hans doktorsavhandling undersökte problemet med mutor bland statliga inspektörer i naturresurs-hantering (se exempel på artiklar från avhandlingen i tidskrifterna Global Environmental Change och Public Administration).
Leder ett projekt som undersöker om etableringen av skyddade reservat i afrikanska länder ger effekter på lokal korruption. Arbetar även med ett projekt som studerar naturreservat som sträcker sig över landsgränser. I ett relaterat projekt undersöks även effekterna av att naturskyddet i regionen militariseras. Har erhållit forskningsmedel från Vetenskapsrådet för flertalet projekt, både som huvudsökande och medsökande.
Genomförde under året 2017-2018 en vistelse som Democracy Fellow vid Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, genom VRs postdok-program.
Sundström arbetar på ett bokmanus, Youth without representation, som undersöker ungas närvaro som kandidater, parlamentariker och ministrar runt om i världen (med Daniel Stockemer).
Han är ansvarig för att utveckla Quality of Government (QoG) institutets dataset och leder QoGs data team.
Profilansvarig för ämnet statsvetenskap inom Samhällsvetenskapligt miljövetarprogram (SMIL) på Handelshögskolan.
Sundströms forskning har publicerats i flertalet artiklar, bland annat i tidskrifterna Electoral Studies, European Journal of Political Research, Governance, Party Politics och World Development (se Google Scholar).
