Academic Matters

Course Framework

As a student in Sweden, you will be expected to take quite a lot of responsibility for your own learning. Unlike in many other university cultures, here students are given much flexibility in the way they learn in order to encourage creative, critical and independent thinking. Group work and presentations are quite common and your attendance is therefore important and expected throughout the duration of the course/session. Courses can vary between being heavily theoretical, practical and hands-on or a combination of both, depending on the lecturer.

Course Selection and Registration

Course selection is possible only after a student has completed the application process and been accepted.

In order to earn credits, visiting students must be registered for the selected courses. The School places no restrictions on the visiting student’s choice of courses provided prerequisite subject and language requirements are met. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the courses selected will be approved by the home institution.

The number of credits registered for may not exceed 30 credits per semester and may not be less than 22.5 credits. Students who are registered for full time studies will be prioritised for housing. Some exceptions may apply if a prior agreement has been made between The School and your university.

Information on course selection will be provided to accepted students directly be email.

Credits and Grading Systems

The Swedish grading systems vary from program to program. Please visit this link for more information:

studentportal.gu.se/english/graduation-and-degrees/degrees/grades-and-grading-scales

Students who have failed an examination will, in most cases, be allowed to take supplementary examinations.

Transcript of Student Record

Upon completion of the individual study program, the International Office will issue a certificate and a transcript of record, listing all courses in which the student has been registered, as well as credits earned and course grades obtained. The transcript will be forwarded to the student´s home university.
