Introduction Days

In your first days in Gothenburg, there will be lots to do and absorb. This page provides information about activities for newly arrived students that are held at the start of the semester. The University Welcome Programme, social activities arranged by student buddies and student associations. There is also quite a lot of administrative tasks you need to take care of as a new student.

Welcome Programme

The International Student Welcome Programme is held at the beginning of each semester. The programme of events and activities provides international students with practical information about the University and living in Gothenburg. It is also a perfect opportunity to meet other international students and Student Buddies from all over the world.

Welcome Services, together with numerous student buddies, usually organise a pick-up service from Landvetter airport (GOT), the central station, and the ferry terminals. International students arriving on the specific Arrival Days can sign up for free pick-up.

Due to the pandemic this year (autumn semester 2021) the Arrival Days are cancelled.

The Welcome Day will be held online this year. We will run the programme twice on 25 August, so that as many of you as possible will be able to join. Expect welcome speeches and introductions to university services, such as the GU card, University Library, student unions and more.

NB: You will receive an invitation in August, roughly two weeks before the Welcome Day.

A seminar is about Swedes and Swedish culture. The lecturer, Vanessa, has personal experience of moving to Sweden and will be drawing from her unique first hand experiences and theoretical knowledge to give a presentation on the Swedes and intercultural competence in Sweden.

We are also inviting current international students to form a panel and talk about their experiences, as well as answering questions about life as a student in Gothenburg. As a student you will be able to submit questions in the chat, which our moderator will then pose to the students during the panel.

You will receive an invitation in August, roughly two weeks before the event.

The Welcome Pack is a tote bag sporting the University of Gothenburg logo. They used to be black with the logo in white, but to make them even more environmentally friendly, we have switched to this beige one.

These bags are only given to international students, so if you see anyone with such a bag out in the city, you have probably just spotted another international student. Its contents includes a map of the city, a University of Gothenburg reflective slap wrap, a list of things to do while in Gothenburg, as well as various information about, for instance, public transport and recycling.

Pick up your Welcome Pack

We will hand out Welcome Packs outside Studenternas Hus at Götabergsgatan 17 on the following dates:

  • 23 August, 13:00-15:00 CEST
  • 24 August, 10:00-12:00 CEST
  • 1 September, 13:00-15:00 CEST
  • 2 September, 10:00-12:00 CEST

More dates will be added as required.

Faculty organised welcome activities

Some faculties at the University also arrange activities for their students at the start of the semester. Individual programmes might also arrange orientation or introduction events. They will contact you via e-mail if that is the case.

Social events

The Student Buddies organise plenty of activities both at the start and throughout the semester in order to help international students settle in and meet fellow students. You can contact them if you need more information about student life in Gothenburg or if you want to know more about the different activities arranged for you.

Unimeet Gothenburg events

These events aim to welcome all new international students to the city of Gothenburg. They are designed to make you discover and experience the city while getting to know other students. Unimeet Gothenburg is a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and the Trade and Industry Group at Göteborg & Co.
