- Orsaken till näspolyper är okänd men det finns en koppling till astma och cystisk fibros, som bägge är allvarliga sjukdomar. Min forskning handlar därför om att kunna fylla på med viktig information om sjukdomen där det i dag saknas kunskap, framförallt kring ärftligheten, symtomen och vilka gener som kan bidra till sjukdomsutvecklingen.

Erik Odhagen - Tonsil Surgery, studies on surgical methods and postoperative haemorrhage

- Det övergripande syfte med avhandlingen var att identifiera riskfaktorer för komplikationer som är möjliga att förbygga vid tonsilloperationer. Syftet var också att utvärdera och jämföra risken för postoperativa komplikationer och risk för reoperation efter två olika typer av tonsilloperationer på barn.

Ann-Christine Mjörnheim - Skattning och diagnostik av gastroesofageala symptom i definierade patientpopulationer med hjälp av frågeformulär

- Forskningsprojekten jag har gjort har gått ut på att i den första studien, ställa frågor till patienter med diabetes typ1. Detta för att ta reda på om de har mer symptom från matstrupen än en ”normalbefolkning”. I den andra studien har vi undersökt patienter med både typiska och icke-typiska symptom från matstrupen och jämfört resultatet från pH-mätningen med ett speciellt frågeformulär avseende reflux-sjukan, alltså när maginnehåll backar upp i matstrupen.

Hon såg här att diabetiker typ 1 har mer symptom från gastrointestinalkanalen, men att dessa symptom var mer relaterade till livsstilsfaktorer respektive andra samtidiga sjukdomar.

Gunhildur Gudnadottir - Paediatric sleep-disordered breathing - diagnostics and treatment

- Vi har visat att om man opererar bort en del av halsmandlarna istället för hela, så har barnen minder smärtor efter operationen och återhämtar sig därför snabbare och stannar inte hemma lika länge. Detta har nu blivit en allt vanligare operationsmetod, säger Gunnhildur Gudnadottir.

I den hälsoekonomiska studien som gjorts använde man sig av det nationella kvalitetsregistret för tonsilloperation, samt Försäkringskassan avseende tillfällig föräldrapenning för vård av barn. Kostnaderna i form av VAB när hela halsmandlarna opereras bort var 61 procent högre än då enbart delar opereras bort, detta är ytterligare en pusselbit som talar för nyttan av denna operationsmetod.

• Bojan Tubic´ - Bone and fat tissue in children and adolescents: studies with focus on osteocalcin

  The general aim was to investigate the possible interplay between bone and fat tissue through clinical studies of children and adolescents. Osteocalcin (OC), a bone formation marker, has been proposed to act as a link between bone and energy metabolism in mice, but human data are inconclusive.
  Conclusions: This thesis could not confirm the hypothesis that OC has a positive effect on glucose and insulin homeostasis, although cOC was lower in obese subjects than in normal weight subjects. The home based WBV intervention study in young children with obesity did not result in any effect on weight, metabolic parameters or calcaneal bone mass.

  I. Visualizing Meyer’s Loop: A Comparison of Deterministic and Probabilistic Tractography.
  II. Tractography of Meyer’s loop for temporal lobe resection – validation by prediction of post-operative visual field outcome.
  In conclusion, PTG is a strong candidate for surgical guidance of TLR that aims to minimize injury to the OR.
  III. Impact of region-of-interest method on quantitative analysis of DTI data in the optic tracts.
  IV. Visual-pathway impairment by pituitary adenomas – quantitative diagnostics by diffusion tensor imaging.
  In conclusion, DTI could detect pathology and degree of injury in the anterior visual pathways and may be useful as an objective diagnostic tool for patients with pituitary adenom as. Choice of ROI method was found to be highly in fluential on DTI parameters whe in the optic tracts were analyzed.

• Helen Larsson - Aspects on the management of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis

  Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory disorder of the esophagus characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and eosinophilia in the esophageal mucosa. This condition may affect approximately 1% of the general population and is strongly associated with allergy/atopic diatheses.
  The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the clinical aspects on the management of patients with EoE.
  Conclusions: A seasonal variation was found in the incidence of acute esophageal bolus impaction in patients with atopic disorders. EoE patients had a substantial burden of symptoms, which improved after treatment, and a partial remission was noted more than one year after diagnosis. A high grade of eosinophilia in the proximal part of the esophagus might serve as a marker for an increased risk of bolus impaction.

• Nina Pauli - Treating radiation-induced trismus in head and neck cancer;Exercise intervention and risk structures

  The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the incidence of trismus in head and neck cancer (HNC) and to assess the treatment of radiation-induced trismus with a structured jaw exercise program using jaw mobilising devices. Furthermore the aim was to investigate anatomic risk structures related to the development of radiation-induced trismus.
  In conclusion, trismus is a common symptom related to the treatment of HNC and regular measurement and assessment of trismus is important. Structured jaw exercise program is recommendable for the treatment of patients with trismus. The masseter muscle may be a possible candidate for future trismus-sparing techniques.

• Lisa Tuomi - Voice Rehabilitation and Functional Outcomes Following Radiotherapy for Laryngeal Cancer

  The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of radiotherapy and voice rehabilitation on voice function and Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) following treatment for laryngeal cancer.
  Conclusion: The results of this thesis demonstrated that voice function and HRQL is affected after radiotherapy. A large proportion had communication functioning indicating the need for vocal rehabilitation. Voice rehabilitation prevented voice deterioration and improved the self-perceived communication function and HRQL. The effects remained in the long-term. The findings suggest that voice rehabilitation could be beneficial to patients after radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer. Additionally it raises the importance of monitoring the communication and voice function through self-assessment and voice recordings.
