Ahmed Alrifaiy - new principal research engineer at Tjärnö Laboratory

In January, Ahmed Alrifaiy started his work at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory as principal research engineer. Ahmed has a PhD in medical technology and comes most recently from Sahlgrenska Academy and a research group that studied obesity and diabetes. Now he is looking forward to learn more about life in the sea. Ahmed replaces Anna-Karin Ring.

What are you going to do here?

"I will help researchers and students with equipment and devices; everything from a microscope to a dishwasher. Make sure everything works, answer questions, help out buying new equipment - anything related to the technical equipment."

What did you do before?

"I worked at Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg. First as a post doc with my own research project, and then as first research engineer with responsibility for technical systems in a group that researches obesity and diabetes. I have a PhD in medical technology from Luleå University of Technology (LTU); my dissertation is about developing methods for studying what happens in the brain during a stroke. I have also worked as a teacher at LTU."

What do you do when you are not working?

"Enjoy life! I like to watch sports – football and ice hockey on TV, and also live. I like to fish; so far mostly perch and pike in the lakes around Gothenburg, but now it may be mackerel. In Gothenburg I have a house that needs some tending. I like to travel and have a dream to visit all the countries in the world before life is over - still have half of them left."

Something else you would like to share?

"I look forward to be working at Tjärnö, and to learn more about life in the sea!"
