Study guidance
Are you interested in university studies but don't know what you want to study? Or have you found a subject area you are interested in and want to know more about?
At the University of Gothenburg, all study counsellors offer general guidance as well as guidance within their own subject area. If your goals change during the process, the study counsellor can guide you to the right subject area.
Everything you say and communicate to study counsellors is protected by our obligation of confidentiality. We look forward to talking with you!
Questions about subjects, courses or programs
If you have a rough idea about what you want to study, you can contact study counsellors who are specialised in specific subject areas. They can answer questions about, for example, credit transfers, courses within programs, or the job market following a specific course or program
Contact subject-specific study counsellors
In the fold-out sections you will find contact details for study counsellors in the different subject areas. You can send your questions via email or book an appointment directly with them.

Prepare your study counselling appointment
To get the most out of your appointment, it is a good idea to prepare yourself in advance as follows:
Write down you questions
Think about your expectations, what you want to get out of the appointment. Write down any questions that you may have.
If your questions relate to a specific subject, programme or course, you should instead schedule an appointment with the study counsellor for that subject area. You find their contact information under the heading "Contact subject-specific study counsellors" higher up on this page.
Read about the courses and programs you can choose from
Find the courses and programs at the University of Gothenburg here: Course and Program Search
Find the courses and programs of study at other universities here: Search program at studyinsweden.se
If you would like our assistance as a sounding board regarding your choice of course/program and help with choosing, bring information about the courses/program you might be interested in to us.
If you have any questions about a specific course/program, you should schedule an appointment with the study counsellor for that course/program. You find their contact information under the heading "Contact subject-specific study counsellors" higher up on this page.
Learn more about careers you are interested in
If you would like career advice, please bring with you information about the careers you are interested in, if you have already come that far in the process.
If you don’t have any idea about what career or profession you might like to choose, we can still help you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here you will find answers to common questions that our study counsellors often get asked.
If you don't know who to contact with a question, contact Servicecenter and they will guide you.
We have made step-by-step guides for you to follow when you want to apply for studies at the University of Gothenburg: Apply
You can find and overview of our courses and programs taught in English on Programs and courses.
If enough students who have been admitted to a course or program decline their places, then the University will start contacting applicants who are on the waiting list. In other words, the University will contact you if and when it is your turn to be offered a place. Admissions from the waiting list are offered in the order in which you are placed in the selection group that you belong to.
If you are studying with a degree as your ultimate goal, you need to be aware that there are specific requirements for each degree. Some degrees can only be studied for via programs (especially those leading to a professional qualification). Some degrees require you to take freestanding courses. There are also degrees where you can choose for yourself if you want to complete your degree by following a program or by taking freestanding courses.
When you follow a program, you are following a ready structure that includes all of the courses required for your degree. If you are taking freestanding courses instead, it is important that you regularly check with a study counsellor within your subject area to ensure that you are studying the courses that are required for the degree that you are aiming for.
Another difference between following a program and taking freestanding courses is that, as a program student, you are guaranteed a place in the mandatory courses included in the program. As a student taking freestanding courses, however, you have to apply for a place in each course before it starts.
Once you have been admitted to a course or program and have accepted a place, you will receive a notification and information from the Department before the course or program starts. You must then register as a student for the course or program, according to the instructions that you receive from the Department. You will lose your place if you do not register.
Courses and programs may be open for late applications. You can find out which courses and programs are open for late application at universityadmissions.se. If you fulfill the entry requirements for the courses or programs that you have applied for, your late application will be given a priority based on the date that your application was received.
If several people apply on the same date, the priority will be assigned randomly by drawing lots. The time of day that you apply does not count; it is the date that counts.
There is an autumn semester and a spring semester. The autumn semester starts around 1 September and runs for 20 weeks. The spring semester starts on the Monday directly after the end of the autumn semester (roughly 20 January) and is also 20 weeks long. There are no holiday periods during the semesters.
All students at the University of Gothenburg should have the opportunity and means to complete their studies. Several forms of assistance are therefore available to support and help you if you feel that your studies or study situation is difficult. Students with disabilities can get study support.
If you have been admitted to but are unable to start your course or program right now, you can apply to defer the start of your studies until a later semester. You need to have a special reason for not being able to start immediately. Read more about it on the page Deferring your studies.
You can find course syllabuses and reading lists on the Student Portal: Search course syllabus and literature list.
