About us

The Department of Marine Sciences is Sweden’s most complete environment for marine research and marine education, and is one of only a few such organisations in Europe.

The Department’s vision is to be a national leader and to carry out activities of the highest international class within the field of marine sciences. Its operations are interdisciplinary in nature and involve both other departments at the Faculty of Science and other University of Gothenburg faculties, as well as other educational institutions in Sweden and worldwide. By working together with research colleagues from other scientific disciplines, the Department will also be able to take on the big global challenges.

Marine Infrastructure

The Department of Marine Sciences is the host department for the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. The infrastructure has laboratories and instruments that enables research at the highest international level, and we welcome researchers and students all over the world.

Cooperation and Outreach

The Department of Marine Sciences is an important node in a complete network of marine research, education, and innovation. We have cooperation partners within the academy, authorities, organisations, and industry.
