Neutzes grupp använder röntgenstrålar som genereras vid synkrotroner och med röntgenfri elektronlaser för att undersöka strukturella förändringar i membranproteiner. Membranproteiner är en stor och diversifierad klass av proteiner som är inblandade i energiöverföring och signalprocesser i levande organismer. Genom att observera strukturella förändringar i membranproteiner kan vi få inblick i hur evolutionen har optimerat membranproteiners funktion för att utföra livsviktiga kemiska reaktioner. Neutzegruppen har flera internationella samarbeten och kombinerar experimentellt arbete för vetenskapliga frågeställningar med att utveckla nya metoder för att tackla dessa frågor.
Neutze avlade sin doktorsexamen i fysik 1995 från University of Canterbury (Nya Zeeland). Han introducerades till området molekylär biofysik av Janos Hajdu vid Oxford University (England) och belönades med ett Humboldt-stipendium i fysik för arbete i Franz Hasselbäch grupp vid Tübingen University (Tyskland). Han återvände sedan till molekylär biofysik som postdoktor i Janos Hajdus grupp vid Uppsala universitet. 1998 befodrades Neutze till biträdande professor med stöd från Vetenskapsrådet, han flyttade sedermera sin grupp till Chalmers tekniska universitet i Göteborg år 2000 och blev sex år senare utnämnd till professor i biokemi vid Göteborgs universitet.

Metodutveckling med röntgenfri elektronlaser
