About Marie Demker

I am professor in Political Science at Gothenburg university since 2004. I am also Dean for the Faculty of Arts since January 2017. Between July 2012 and December 2016 I was Assistant Dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

My research interests are comparative politics, international politics and research design and method. My work has a focus on European political parties, ideologies, value systems, public opinion and foreign policy.

Since more than two decades I have had a research interest in nationalist parties and xenophobic opinions. The French Gaullist party was the object of my doctoral thesis and an overview is available in Changing Party Ideology. Gaullist Parties Facing Voters, Leaders and Competitors (Party Politics, 1997). Other publications in this field are Scandinavian right-wing parties: diversity more than convergence? (chapter, 2012 the book is available as electronic resource at the University Library, Gothenburg University), Another kind of class voting: the working-class sympathy for Sweden Democrats (chapter, 2013 with M. Oskarson), Racism, Xenophobia and Opposition to immigration in Sweden (chapter 2013) and Room for relaignment. The working class sympathy for Sweden Democrats (article, 2014, with M Oskarson)

I have also, since my doctoral research, a special interest in French politics. My most recent publication in this field is a book on Pierre Mendès France and the wars in Indochina and Algeria: National Identity and Colonial Power. Pierre Mendès France and the French Decolonization (2008).

I am one of the founders and managers of the research group Partiforskningsprogrammet (in Swedish) where political parties in general are in research focus. My latest publication in this area is Sailing along new cleavages. Understanding the electoral success of the Swedish Pirate Party in the European Parliament election 2009.

As a member of the steering committe for "Culture, Religion and Health", a multidisciplinary research program that focused on Swedish welfare in transition. The final report from that program was launched in November 2014: Culture, Health and Religion at the Millennium: Sweden Unparadised (with Y. Leffler and O. Sigurdson) and as the special issue "Health and well-being in today's Scandinavia" of the LIR-Journal vol 16 no 6. A special perspective on the theme is covered in my article on religious liberty in Sweden, "Religious liberty in democracy: Between individual tolerance and democratic inclusion" published in Nordic Journal for Religion and Society, vol 20 no 1.
