University of Gothenburg

About us

HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg – is one of the Nordic region’s leading environments for artistic education and practice-based artistic research.

We offer programmes in design, film, photography, fine art, craft, literary composition and teacher education in visual arts and sloyd. Our international community brings together students, researchers and staff who share a commitment to artistic exploration, critical thinking and collaborative practice.

Practice-based research with international reach

Artistic research is a central part of our identity. Our researchers and doctoral students work across disciplines, combining artistic methods with theoretical perspectives to develop new knowledge and contribute to pressing questions in contemporary society. HDK-Valand has offered doctoral education for more than two decades, and our research environments continue to grow in depth, diversity and international reach.

Part of Scandinavia’s largest artistic faculty

As part of the Artistic Faculty at the University of Gothenburg – the largest arts faculty in Scandinavia – we benefit from a unique breadth of artistic fields. This creates opportunities for collaboration across design, fine art, film, photography, craft, literary composition, music and performing arts. Together, we form an open and non-hierarchical academic culture where experimentation, dialogue and artistic freedom are central.

A dynamic and inclusive artistic community

At HDK-Valand, artistic and pedagogical practices evolve in a dynamic, inclusive and internationally engaged environment – shaped by the ideas, materials and collaborations that define our artistic community

Locations and workshops

HDK-Valand has two creative environments: our urban campus in central Gothenburg and our material-based workshop setting at Campus Steneby in Dals Långed. Together, they offer unique opportunities for artistic exploration.
