University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra

The core of the orchestra consists of students at the two-year international master's programme in symphonic orchestral performance at the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The education is unique in its kind and is conducted in collaboration with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Opera. The orchestra projects are done in collaboration with students from the bachelor's degree in classical music. Sometimes students from other music academies are invited to participate in and complement the orchestra. The artistic director of the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is Henrik Schaefer.

Each academic year, the University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra makes eight orchestral productions with a total of about 15 public concerts. Internationally renowned conductors and soloists are engaged to these performances. Recently, Anja Bihlmaier, Patrik Ringborg and Karen Kaminski have visited the orchestra. Among the soloists are Christian Zacharias, piano, Amalie Stalheim, cello and Isabelle van Keulen, violin who is also part of the Artist in Residence Programme.

Every year, the orchestra also collaborates with the opera programme at the Academy of Music and Drama. The University of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is an ambassador for the University of Gothenburg, which supports the concert and tour activities.
