Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (KAW)

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has in many ways contributed to developing Sweden into a prominent life science nation. In total, the Foundation has allocated over 6.2 billion Swedish kronor for life science research during the period 2015-2032. Through grants for equipment, national infrastructure, as well as project and individual grants, the Foundation has been active in the field's development for more than 30 years.

During 2014 and 2015, the establishment of four Wallenberg Centers for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) began at the universities in Gothenburg, Linköping, Lund, and Umeå in collaboration with their respective healthcare regions. In Gothenburg, the collaboration also includes the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, and has an additional T as in Translational in the name, to highlight this important aspect of the centre.

The national WCMM initiative, which extends until 2028, has been granted funding of one billion Swedish kronor by the KAW Foundation.
