Om Maddie Leach

Maddie Leach is an artist, Senior Lecturer and enhetschef i fri konst (Head of Fine Art unit) at the Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg. She arrived in Göteborg in March 2016 from Wellington, New Zealand where she was Programme Leader for the MFA and a founding staff member of Whiti o Rehua/The School of Art at Massey University.

Leach’s practice is one that seeks viable ways of making artworks in order to interpret and respond to unique place-determined content and enacts a process of establishing specific relationships between form, materials, locations, histories, events, individuals and communities. Leach no longer creates pre-existing object-based works, yet her creative process often engages and reveals the pragmatics of her sculptural training.

She follows a research-intensive approach to develop conceptual trajectories and work through questions of materiality, process and public presentation with the aim of adapting and responding to local conditions. This way of working can be identified in many of her projects such as: The Blue Spring/Mata Air Murni (2015) developed for Jakarta Biennale, Indonesia; 28th October 2834 (2015) for Spaced 2: Future Recall in Western Australia; her permanent installation Evening Echo in Shalom Park, Cork, Ireland (2011); Let us keep together for Iteration: Again, Tasmania (2011) and Signs and Wonders Shall Appear for Close Encounters, Chicago (2010). Each has resolved itself differently in terms of their media, modes of presentation and public engagement, however all of them share a search for the peculiar local narratives and histories that Leach uses as entry points to compose projects that inhabit the space between what is expected and what happens, between potential and actual forms.

Leach’s composition of seemingly disparate elements deliberately elude spectacle in favour of a keen poetic resonance and strong conceptual and formal rigour. Within this framework she has consistently varied the way she resolves her work – having fabricated objects or had them fabricated for her, used text and print media, worked with video, performative actions and processes of exchange. Elements of uncertainty and risk become evident in many of her projects whereby idiosyncratic narratives are drawn between a tenacious logic of material and economic actions, elusive hopes and fragile navigations of possibility. Alongside this she reveals an uncanny capacity to negotiate assistance and support for the production of her work and has independently achieved a number of ambitious partnerships with industry, media and local communities.

In 2014 Leach was one of four artists nominated for New Zealand’s Walters Prize – awarded for an outstanding work of contemporary art produced and exhibited during the past two years. Her work has been included in the 2015 Jakarta Biennale lead by Charles Esche; 2013 Auckland Triennial curated by Hou Hanru and 2013 SCAPE Biennial of Public Art curated by Blair French. In 2014 she undertook an international residency with International Art Space (Perth, WA) and Spike Island (Bristol, UK). In 2012 she was Taranaki Artist in Residence with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth and in 2008 International Artist in Residence at the National Sculpture Factory in Cork City, Ireland.

She is currently developing new projects for Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) in Vancouver, Canada; Neu Kirche in Pittsburgh, USA and Lokstallet in Strömstad, Sweden.
