Welcome to the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv)!

Here we give courses and programs and conduct research within areas that deals with the world around us. Biology is the the study of life, that is all living organisms and the processes that control them, whereas environmental sciences focus on the interplay between humans and nature.
You find us that work at the department in the Botanical building (close to the Botanical garden) and the Zoology building (at Medicinareberget) in Gothenburg as well as at Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil.

About our educations

We offer courses and programs at both graduate and undergraduate level, in mainly biology and environmental science

About our research

At the department we study diverse organisms in many different habitats and from many different perspectives

Pollen and allergies

The pollen laboratory has been at the department since 1975. Herbarium

Herbarium GB dates back to the 18th century and is a university-wide research infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg, with placement at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Here, dried plants, fungi, algae, etc. are stored for comparative and evolutionary studies.

Bioscience explained

Bioscience Explained is a web magazine for modern life sciences. Life sciences are developing very quickly and the need for teacher training is very high. The magazine's main target group is teachers who teach children and young people in science subjects, but it can also be used for eg. projects.
