About Lena Andersson

Research area

My research areas concern all aspects of mental illness, help-seeking behaviours, social differences in health, migration, health promotion and prevention and global health and human rights. I defended my dissertation in 2006 at the unit for Social Medicine, University of Gothenburg with the dissertation Regional differences in disability pensions and sickness absence with psychiatric diagnoses in Sweden and Norway 1980-2000. The influence of demography and access to psychiatric health care.

I am member of the research group Mental health in a life course perspective (PHIL), an interdisciplinary research group for research on mental health. The research field concerns mental health in relation to living conditions at individual, group and societal level and its relation to care and treatment. Our research focus spans the entire life cycle in relation to childhood conditions, the importance of relationships, gender equality, social networks, social capital, norms, oppression, exclusion and violence, the importance of institutions and society's areas of responsibility in relation to health promotion, prevention and care.

I lecture in my field of research and have developed new courses and pedagogical elements. Teaches at the International master in Social work and Human Rights, at the master of the Global Health program, mainly at the course Health Promotion and Prevention, and at the bachelor level social work program.

I have taught at foreign universities; School of Public Health and School of Social Welfare, University at Albany, USA, Department of Nursing, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elisabeth, South Africa, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi, Vietnam, Faculty of Health Promotion, Rajarata University, Sri Lanka.
