Engström is a Registered Nurse with specialist training in surgical care with more than 20 years of experience working at the Sahlgrenska surgery department. She has primarily been active in surgical emergency care, where she also works clinically. For many years, she worked as a research nurse and research coordinator at the surgery ward. This work was done in collaboration with internal, external, national and international partners from the clinic, academia, and industry.

Since 2019, she works 20% as a project manager for R&D Director Caterina Finizia and is responsible for and runs several projects in the R&D unit's management team.
