About Ludger Grote

Ludger Grote is Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Senior Consultant at the Pulmonary Department, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. He has a longstanding clinical and research focus on sleep medicine and respiratory disorders.

After completing his training in sleep medicine at the Zeitreihenlabor, University of Marburg, Germany, he joined the sleep research group at Sahlgrenska University in 1998. He currently leads the research group at the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders, Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy. From 2015 to 2016, he was a visiting researcher at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, where he worked on innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for sleep-disordered breathing in patients with COPD.

His research addresses multiple aspects of sleep health in clinical and epidemiological contexts. Key areas include advanced patient phenotyping, cardio-metabolic risk assessment during sleep, pathophysiological endotyping of sleep apnea, pharmacological treatment strategies for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and the links between sleep-disordered breathing and cardiometabolic disease. Additional research interests include sleep health in COPD and the interaction between pain syndromes and sleep.

Professor Grote has authored more than 250 scientific publications, book chapters, and monographs. He actively contributes to national and international research networks, including the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA), the Swedish Sleep Apnea Registry (SESAR), the SLEEP REVOLUTION network, the Swedish research network for CPAP, Oxygen and Ventilator Registries (DISCOVERY), and the SLEEP SCAPIS group.

He has held leadership roles in scientific societies, including serving as Chair of the Assembly of National Sleep Societies (2011–2014) and member of the Scientific Committee (2018–2021) within the European Sleep Research Society. He is a former President of the Swedish Sleep Society (2007–2011) and has served as Scientific Secretary (2017–2021) and Chair of the Scientific Committee (2021–2025) in the Swedish Respiratory Society. He currently chairs two national guideline working groups on “Obstructive Sleep Apnea” (since 2019) and “Sleep and Wake Disorders” (since 2025).

Professor Grote is deeply engaged in medical education. At Sahlgrenska Academy, he co-leads the internal medicine course LPG061 and supervises PhD students in sleep research. He has promoted sleep medicine education nationally and internationally as Chair of the Swedish Sleep Society’s educational programs (2012–2022) and as a member of the European Sleep Research Society Education and Examination Committee (2014–2025).
