About Sylva Frisk

Areas of research

My current research is within the field of higher education, with a focus on policy and organisational/cultural aspects. I take an interest in academic leadership for teaching and learning and quality development/quality assurance. As an anthropologist I approach the organisation as a central cultural context for understanding the practice and challenges of contemporary higher education.

My earlier research focuses gender and Islam. More specifically I have done research on urban women’s every day religious practices I the context of the modern religious reform movement in Malaysia. I have also an interest in the gendered dimensions of religious/political activism in Malaysia. Theoretically these themes have urged me to think about how the concept of agency is understood from a feminist and anthropological perspective.

Teaching and tutoring

I was appointed the title excellent teacher in 2020. My teaching experiences range from undergraduate courses in, for example, social anthropology and Asian studies to teaching in the MA programme in Global Studies. It includes supervision and examination and course coordination on both levels. I am also teaching in a course on pedagogics in higher education (PIL102) and I have been responsible for the development of, as well as coordinating, the university's Leadership programme for education managers (utbildningsansvariga).

Academic leadership

I have 20 years experience of academic leadership for teaching and learning. More recently in the role as Deputy Dean for education (2013-2023), as Pro Head of Department responsible for education at the School of Global Studies (2009-2013), and before that as Director of Studies for the Master Programme in Global Studies (2007-2009).
