The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology provides a unique study environment in Sweden where expertise and knowledge span across a wide range of molecular sciences. Here, you can study chemistry, molecular biology or bioinformatics.

Our dedicated teachers aim to give you a solid foundation by incorporating current research into our teaching and by offering you the possibility to perform an individual laboratory-based project work of up to one year in a top research group. This way, you will gain both a broad knowledge and a deep understanding in important scientific questions needed to solve future global challenges within health and medicine, environment and climate.

Study Chemistry

You can choose between two international programmes: a broad Master’s programme in Chemistry where you can create your own unique scientific profile based on your interests and future goals, and a challenging Master's Programme in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry. You can also study one or more of our many stand-alone courses, all linked to world-leading research.

Study Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology offers a Master's programme in Molecular Biology, which you can tailor to your own interests and ambitions through a wide range of advanced-level elective courses, and a Master's programme in Bioinformatics. You can also study one or more stand-alone courses, all linked to cutting-edge research.

Top 3 in Sweden and top 75 worldwide in the field of Life Sciences according to ShanghaiRanking 2024

In the field of Life Sciences—Biological Sciences, the University of Gothenburg ranks second in Sweden and 66th worldwide according to ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Acdemic Subjects 2024. 

Biological sciences include biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, cell biology, and microbiology.

Master's degree project

At the end of your master's studies, you will perform an individual laboratory-based project work of up to one year in one of our top research groups, giving you the opportunity to specialize in the research area you are most interested in.
