About Eva Holmgren

Eva Holmgren is a registered physiotherapist, PhD in physiotherapy and senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg. She is Programme Director for the Physiotherapy Programme at Sahlgrenska Academy and works with education, research, pedagogical development and collaboration between academia and clinical practice.

Eva’s research mainly concerns physical function in older people, with a particular focus on gait, balance, fall risk and health-related quality of life among frail older adults. Falls are one of the most common causes of injury in older people and may also lead to reduced physical activity, fear of falling and decreased independence. Eva’s research interest therefore concerns how physical function can be assessed, understood and strengthened in order to promote health, safety and participation among older people.

A central part of Eva’s work concerns the development of physiotherapy education. As Programme Director for the Physiotherapy Programme, she works with educational quality, course and programme development, assessment, student progression and collaboration with organisations where physiotherapists are educated and practise. She also holds an appointment as Clinical Lecturer and Academic–Municipal Liaison, with 20 per cent of her position based in the City of Gothenburg. In this role, she serves as a link between the University of Gothenburg and municipal primary care, with the aim of strengthening the connection between education, research and clinical practice.

Eva has a broad engagement in educational matters at local, national and international levels. Since 2018, she has represented the Physiotherapy Programme on the Education Committee for the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Programmes at Sahlgrenska Academy. From 2025, this assignment continues within the Education Committee for Neuroscience, where she represents the Physiotherapy Programme. She also represents the University of Gothenburg in the national network of physiotherapy programmes in Sweden and is a member of the Education Policy Council of the Swedish Association of Physiotherapists.

Internationally, Eva is engaged in the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education, ENPHE, where she has served as Country Coordinator for Sweden and the Swedish member universities since 2025. She has also contributed as one of two national experts in the Swedish delegation involved in the European-level work reviewing the European Framework for Physiotherapy Education. Through these assignments, she contributes to the strategic development of physiotherapy education, educational quality and professional development in both national and international contexts.

Eva graduated as a physiotherapist from Umeå University in 2002 and completed her PhD in 2010 with a thesis on exercise and identification of fall risk in older people after stroke. She has been affiliated with the University of Gothenburg since 2012. She has previous clinical experience as a physiotherapist in sports medicine, geriatric rehabilitation and municipal rehabilitation.
