About Caroline Berggren

Research interests

My general research interest is social division based on class and gender in the educational system. So far, I have had the opportunity to work with the selection of applicants to higher education and with the selection of higher education graduates to the labour market. Worldwide, Sweden is considered a country of equal opportunity. My research shows, however, that old structures show up in new forms, despite current policies on equality. For example, primarily men from privileged backgrounds took advantage of the alternative entrance routes to higher education, which had been established to facilitate under-represented groups of students. Another example is that, despite women’s increased participation in higher education and high completion rate, the odds are higher that male graduates from privileged backgrounds will end up in better paid positions. This phenomenon takes place regardless of an actual match between their credentials and the employment offer. I have also studied to what extent tertiary educated become self-employed. Tertiary educated are not likely to work as self-employed, unless they are educated within agriculture, forestry or arts. I have mainly carried out statistical analyses on data from national registers, but recently also analysed policies about entrepreneurship education and performed semi-structured interviews about the ”Swedish fika”.

Teaching

I supervise and examine theses with different theoretical and methodological perspectives. I teach sex/gender in research, theory, history, assessment, educational- and societal structures. I have also taught basic, descriptive statistics.
