The honorary doctors Dencik and Atkinsson finally received their doctorate

Last Friday, we finally got to celebrate our honorary doctors, the actor David Dencik and Dennis Atkinsson, professor of image pedagogy, both appointed in the spring of 2020 during the pandemic.

Dennis Atkinsson and David Dencik were appointed honorary doctor at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts during the pandemic, in 2020. Now we could finally welcome them to Gothenburg for the Conferment of Doctoral Degrees.

During the week, they have held lectures to students and doctoral students at the Faculty of Fine Applied and Performing Arts, and met with teachers and researchers. Last Friday, we finally got to put a doctor's hat on their wise heads and pay tribute to them at the university's main celebration, the Conferment of Doctoral Degrees.

David Dencik, actor and for many known for his roles in series such as Chernobyl, Top of the Lake and in the latest Bond film No Time to Die. He has also been an Artist in Residence at one of the faculty's departments, the Academy of Music and Drama, since 2018. Here he has shared experiences from his long career through workshops, master classes for students and teachers. He also participated in a number of well-attended public conversations, about his views on acting and his roles and interpretations in the films that have met a large audience around the world.

Dennis Atkinsson, is Professor Emeritus of Visual Education, at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has long been an international leader in the research field Visual Arts Education. His texts and theories have for many years been widely used by the students at the teacher’s educations at HDK-Valand, the faculty's other department. During the week, Dennis Atkinsson lectured to students in the teacher educations visual art and sloyd and doctoral students at the graduate schools connected to the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts.

Two doctoral dissertations this year to catch up

Already this autumn, the next Conferment of Doctoral Degrees will take place. Then we have invited Liz Lehrman, choreographer and educator, and Trinh T. Minh − ha, filmmaker and literary theorist, who were appointed honorary doctors in 2021. News on gu.se from November 2021.
