About Kristoffer Stedt

I am a researcher at the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. In my research, I explore macroalgae (seaweeds) and their potential within sustainable food and aquaculture systems. A central focus of my work is how cultivation conditions can be optimized to enhance seaweed growth and improve their biochemical composition. I primarily work with the species dulse (Palmaria palmata) and sea lettuce (Ulva fenestrata).

Seaweeds can grow fast and absorb large amounts of nutrients when cultivated in nutrient-rich waters. In my research, I therefore investigate how seaweed cultivation can be integrated with food industries and aquaculture systems that generate nutrient-rich process waters and side streams. By reusing these nutrients for seaweed cultivation, resources that would otherwise be lost can be converted into new biomass and potential food or feed ingredients.

In addition to my own research, I contribute to other research projects, including the restoration of kelp forests along the Swedish west coast. I am a certified commercial diver (S30/IDSA Level 1), diving supervisor, and Ship’s officer class VIII, which allows me to combine my research with practical fieldwork both above and below the water surface.
