About Göran Wallin

I am a plant ecophysiologist with interests in the functioning of boreal and tropical forest ecosystems. My research is focused on field manipulative experiments to understand how global change and air pollutants affects forest ecosystems. Other topics are carbon, water and nutrients dynamics of boreal and tropical montane forest, specifically in northern Scandinavian and Africa (Rwanda), respectively. Since 2003, I am strongly engaged in capacity building in Rwanda along with establishment of different tropical forest research projects, together with different partners at University of Gothenburg (UGOT), University of Rwanda (UR), Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), and other universities and organizations world wide.

I am a PI in the Rwanda TREE project (www.RwandaTREE.com) - a collaboration between UGOT, UR and RFA to study the effects of changing climate on tropical montane forest trees (supported by Swedish Research Council, VR; and Formas). I collaborate with Forestry Research Institute of Sweden to study potential warming effect on Norway spruce trees planted at four common gardens along a latitude gradient from Uppsala (Sweden) to Bordaux (France). I manage permanent monitoring plots in Nyungwe national park in Rwanda, and as well as a number of weather station in Rwanda and Europe. I am a PI in the research platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate (BECC) – a strategic research area between UGOT and Lund University.

Teacher on several basic and advanced level courses, especially in environmental science, e.g. Environmental Sciences (ES1201), Natural Resources Management (ES1300), Pollutants effects and dispersal on Biological Systems (ES1305), Environmental Impact Assessment (ES2419) etc. I have also been founding and leading the undergraduate Environmental education programs at UGOT for many years and international exchange programs for Bachelor, Master and PhD level students.
