About Ewa-Lena Bratt

Ewa-Lena Bratt is a Professor of Nursing at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. Her research focuses on transitional care within healthcare, with a particular emphasis on young people living with chronic conditions. With more than 30 years of clinical experience in paediatric cardiology and a strong academic profile, she is a leading authority in person-centred transitional care.

Research Focus and Leadership

Ewa-Lena Bratt leads the research group Transitional Care in Healthcare, which aims to improve care transitions across levels and providers for youth with long-term conditions. She is one of the leader and initiators of the national research programme STEPSTONES, which develops and evaluates structured person-centred transition programmes. STEPSTONES has been implemented at multiple university hospitals in Sweden and expanded into areas such as congenital heart disease, type 1 diabetes, asthma, and digital formats through Digi-STEPSTONES.

She is also the PI for the research project Adole7C (Adolescents receiving Continuous Care for Childhood-onset Chronic Conditions).

Academic Roles and International Engagement

Since 2024, Ewa-Lena Bratt has served as Vice Dean for Internationalisation and Collaboration at the Sahlgrenska Academy. She is also a member of key governance bodies such as the Council for Doctoral Education (FUS) and the Research Board (FOS). Her international engagement includes honorary appointments and collaborative networks, including her appointment in 2024 as an Honorary Professor at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Teaching and Supervision

Ewa-Lena teaches and supervises at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. She is the main supervisor of several PhD students and has a particular interest in the development of teaching methods with an international perspective. She has contributed to the integration of international nursing students in courses addressing complex care situations, thereby strengthening the global dimension of nursing education at the University of Gothenburg.

Clinical Practice

Since 1998, she has been clinically active in paediatric cardiology at the Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital. Her professorship is combined with a clinical post as a specialist nurse (20%) and she currently holds the position of University Hospital Head Nurse at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

With over 50 peer-reviewed publications and extensive engagement in both national and international conferences, Ewa-Lena Bratt is a prominent researcher in her field. She has received numerous competitive research grants from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, Forte and ALF Västra Götalandsregionen.
