About Ewa-Lena Bratt

Ewa-Lena Bratt is a professor in nursing, specializing in transitions within healthcare. She is a registered nurse with specialized training in healthcare for children and adolescents, with over 30 years of experience in pediatric healthcare, particularly focusing on children and youth with heart defects.

Research

Ewa-Lena leads the Health care transition research group. She is one of the research leaders in the extensive national research project Stepstones. Within the Stepstones project, a person-centered transition program has been developed and evaluated. Simultaneously, process evaluations and health economic assessments have been conducted. The Stepstones program is now being implemented in various hospitals across Sweden. The Stepstones research program includes the following projects:

  • Stepstones - congenital heart defects
  • Stepstones - diabetes
  • Stepstones - implementation
  • Stepstones - long-term follow-up
  • Digi-Stepstones

Additionally, Ewa-Lena leads the international collaborative project Adole7C (Adolescents receiving Continuous Care for Childhood-onset Chronic Conditions), a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, KU Leuven in Belgium, and Cape Town in South Africa.

She serves as the study director for the SHIFT-care research school and is a member of FUS (Doctoral Education Committee), FUK (Doctoral Education Committee at Sahlgrenska Academy), and FOS (Research Committee).

Teaching

Ewa-Lena teaches and examines at undergraduate, advanced, and research levels. She is responsible for courses such as "Congenital Heart Defects in Children and Adolescents" 7.5 credits, "Advanced Nursing for Children and Adolescents with Heart Defects" 7.5 credits, and the course "Care during Transfer from Pediatric to Adult Healthcare" 7.5 credits (advanced level). Additionally, she is an examiner for the course "Complex Care Situations" 7.5 credits in semester 5 of the nursing program and in the research education course "Qualitative Methods II," where she also teaches. She has also shared course responsibility in the mandatory research education course "Introduction to Research Theory and Quantitative and Qualitative Design" 5 credits. Ewa-Lena is also involved in developing methods to integrate incoming international nursing students into the complex care situations course.

Clinical Practice

Since 1998, Ewa-Lena has worked with children and adolescents with congenital heart defects. Her professorship position is associated with a role as a specialist nurse (20%) at the Pediatric Heart Center, Queen Silvia Children's Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital. In December 2021, she was appointed as the chief nurse at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
