About Tobias Davidsson

Background I am a social worker and hold both a master’s and a doctoral degree in social work. I defended my dissertation in the spring of 2015, in which I examined how certain practices and discourses that characterized Swedish poor relief in the late 19th century have been revived in contemporary Swedish social policy.

Research Interests My research focuses primarily on Swedish social and labor market policy. I am interested in how social institutions shape, discipline, and mold people in accordance with the interests of the prevailing political economy, but also in how resistance can be formulated and expressed. From a broader perspective, my research can be said to revolve around issues of social exclusion and control. In a recently completed research project (2021–25), I collaborated with Erik Eriksson at Lund University to analyze how excessive debt among young adults (ages 18–25) affects their transition to adulthood in terms of establishing themselves in the labor and housing markets, as well as how personal relationships are affected: https://www.soch.lu.se/skuldtyngd

Internal Networks I am a member of the research platform Social Exclusion and Control (SEK).

Teaching Previously, I primarily taught the philosophy of science and scientific method at the introductory and advanced levels, and I was the course coordinator for “Introduction to Social Work” in the social work program.

Administrative Roles Since the fall of 2026, I serve as Head of Department.
