Meet our staff: Sofia Berglén, accountant

For nearly two years, Sofia has been working as an accountant at Core Facilities, one of our research infrastructures. In her role, she oversees the finances for the external funding that the organisation has been granted, provides answers to financial inquiries, and handles other tasks related to her area of expertise.

Why did you apply for the position at the University of Gothenburg?

I had previously worked in finance within the public sector and enjoyed it. When a vacancy as an accountant opened up at the University of Gothenburg, I found it intriguing. This was in 2014, and I hadn't previously worked in the education sector, so it felt like a new and interesting field. Since then, I have applied for other positions within the University, which has given me the opportunity to explore and engage in various parts of GU.

What might a typical workday look like?

At certain times of the year, especially during our financial reporting periods, we have fixed schedules outlining tasks to be completed, so the days and tasks are quite predetermined. In between those periods, my responsibilities include monitoring the finances for the external funding that Core Facilities has been granted, providing answers to various financial inquiries, and handling other tasks that arise within my area of expertise. The variety in my tasks is something I highly value.

What's the best thing about working at the University of Gothenburg?

The colleagues at Gothenburg University are incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere is delightful. I also appreciate the wide variety of tasks, which make each day interesting and challenging.

Moreover, at Gothenburg University, there are great opportunities for development and diversity in tasks, as well as the chance to network within different areas. Personally, I have been given expanded responsibilities, greater accountability, and the opportunity to attend various skills development programs offered by the University. This has helped me continue to grow in my role.
