How to get there
Tjärnö Marine Laboratory is located on the northern Swedish west coast, close to the Norwegian border, on the beautiful island of Tjärnö. The nearest town is Strömstad, 13 km away. It is about 170 km to Göteborg and 140 km to Oslo.
Tjärnö is located on the eastern side of the Kosterfjord, at 58° 52' N, 11° 10' E. The island of Tjärnö is connected to the mainland by bridges.
Public transportation
Västtrafik operates buses between Strömstad and Tjärnö, and buses and trains between Göteborg and Strömstad
From Oslo to Halden there is a train (NSB) and from Halden to Strömstad a bus (Västtrafik).
Color Line has ferry traffic between Sandefjord and Strömstad.
By car
From Göteborg
Take the E6 north and follow the signs for Oslo. After about 150 km (about 20 km north of Tanumshede) leave E6 at exit 109 towards Tjärnö. Drive 2 km and turn right onto road number 176, at the signpost ”Strömstad 12”. After 6 km turn left, at the signpost ”Tjärnö 7”. After 8 km, and after crossing the islands of Daftö and Öddö, and passing Tjärnö church (on the right), you will come to the bridge onto the island Saltö. The Tjärnö Laboratory parking is on the left immediately before the bridge. The Tjärnö Laboratory is a short walk down the road opposite the entrance to the parking.
From Oslo
Take the E6 south and follow the signs for Göteborg. You will cross the impressive Svinesund bridge, entering Sweden. 16 km after the bridge, turn right towards Strömstad N(orth) and C(enter) on road 176. After 3 km, turn left in a roundabout, staying on road 176 and going towards E18. At the end of this road, (after another 2 km), turn left in a roundabout, still on road 176 and towards E6. Follow this road 4 km until you see the signpost ”Tjärnö 7”, turn right here. After 8 km, and after crossing the islands of Daftö and Öddö, and passing Tjärnö church (on the right), you will come to the bridge onto the island Saltö.
