Apply for exchange courses
This page explains how to apply for courses as an exchange student at the University of Gothenburg. Exchange students follow a separate course application process and should not apply through universityadmissions.se.

Some courses have a limited number of places, and not all listed courses are guaranteed to run. Choose your courses carefully and include backup options in case your first choices are not available.

Application process
How you apply for courses depends on the faculty or department where you will study and whether you are coming through a university-wide agreement.
Typically, you can apply for courses within your subject field at the faculty or department covered by the exchange agreement between your home university and the University of Gothenburg. If you are unsure which faculty or department you belong to, please contact your international coordinator.
You may be able to take courses at other faculties if this is agreed in advance and places are available. Contact the international coordinator at your host department for more information.
Course application procedures vary between faculties. Make sure you follow the instructions for your faculty or university-wide agreement.
Avoid timetable clashes
In many countries, it is common to take several courses in parallel for the entire semester. At the University of Gothenburg, it is most common to take courses one after another. When choosing your courses, check both when they are taught and their study pace to avoid timetable clashes.
Four quarters
The semester is divided into four quarters. Exchange students are expected to take 30 credits per semester. For example, you can take four full-time courses worth 7.5 credits each, with one course in each quarter.
Other combinations are also possible. The number of courses you take depends on their credit value. Courses are commonly worth 7.5 or 15 credits, but they can range from 2 to 30 credits.
When planning your courses, check:
- which quarter or quarters the course runs
- how many credits the course is worth
- whether the course is full-time or part-time.
This will help you avoid timetable clashes and plan a suitable study load.
100% is maximum workload
A course with a study pace of 100% is a full-time course and is normally difficult to combine with another course during the same period. Courses with a lower study pace may be combined with other courses.
In exceptional cases, you may be allowed to study at more than 100%. You must discuss this with your international coordinator at the University of Gothenburg.

Quarter 1 is the first part of the semester (usually around a month), Quarter 1 to 2 make up the first half of the semester and Quarter 1 to 4 make up the full semester.
Entry requirements
You must meet the entry requirements of each course you apply for. The relevant department will assess whether you meet the requirements.
Your English proficiency is expected to correspond to at least CEFR B2 in all areas.
Transcript of Records
After your exchange, you can generate an Official Transcript of Records in Ladok. The transcript shows your academic results at the University of Gothenburg. Please note that the failing grade (F) will not appear on the transcript. Only passed courses can be included in the transcript.
