Marine Geology Group

Research group

Short description

Our group studies the sediments from the seafloor deposited in the deep ocean, but most of all on the shelf and in the coastal zone.

We focus on how and where sediments were deposited, what material do they contain and what processes affect sediment characteristics after the deposition. To do so we use special techniques, such as acoustic methods and collecting long and short sediment cores.

The microfossils tell us about recent and past changes in the marine environment, including changes in land runoff, primary productivity, ocean acidification, oxygenation and climate, as well as introduction of invasive species.

Analysis of pollutants in the sediments reveals temporal and spatial distribution of human-induced pollution.
