Japanese - research
Our scientific profile is centered on Japanese linguistics from a broad perspective. Within this research area, we focus on several specializations: role language (yakuwarigo), translation, language ideology, the history of ideas, and theoretical Japanese linguistics.
Research areas
Role Language
The research field of role language (yakuwarigo) investigates how the linguistic features of fictional characters are used to convey character types and social roles. Our focus is on analyzing role language in Japanese fictional works and their translations.
Translation Studies
Within translation studies, translation is viewed as a form of cultural transfer where the interpretation of text, speech, and imagery can be approached from various perspectives.
Language Ideology
Under the theme of language ideology, we examine how evolving assumptions and attitudes regarding the Japanese language reflect broader perceptions of Japan and the Japanese people, both within and outside Japan’s borders.
Linguistic History of Ideas
The aim of this research is to make the indigenous Japanese grammatical tradition accessible to a broader audience. Japanese linguists from previous eras are of interest both from a historical perspective and because their theoretical analyses remain relevant today.
Theoretical Japanese Linguistics
Theoretical linguistic research within the subject of Japanese is conducted in the areas of semantics and pragmatics. This research not only enhances our understanding of the Japanese language but also provides valuable insights for general linguistics.
