The IT University

The IT University started in 2001 as a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, the City of Gothenburg, and the local business community.

IT University our history

The start of the IT University in 2001

"The main reason to start an IT University is to powerfully coordinate the resources in the IT area that are available at both universities."

In 2001, a number of educational programmes were established at Lindholmen under the name "IT University", where the educations in fact were given by either Chalmers University of Technology, or University of Gothenburg. The main idea was to have interdisciplinary master's programmes of a kind that were lacking in the region at the time, with healthcare as one of the possible focus areas.

The IT University was conceived as a new form of collaboration, while the operations would be part of the respective universities. Through the collaboration, the IT University would be an arena for both institutions of higher education, a meeting place where the intention was "to achieve synergy effects by letting teachers/researchers with different backgrounds and specializations work in close collaboration".

2009: The IT University is transformed into a pure network for collaboration

Over time, the hybrid organization became more and more legally complex and more difficult to administer, and in 2009 the part that made up the IT University Faculty became a pure faculty at the University of Gothenburg under the name IT Faculty. The part of the IT University that constituted a department became one of the University's and Chalmers' integrated departments under the name Department of Applied IT. What remained in its original form as the IT University was the network part, which was used to support various initiatives in the IT area and facilitate cooperation.

Facts about the IT University

The IT University started in 2001 as a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, the City of Gothenburg, and the local business community.

A number of educations with an interdisciplinary focus started at Lindholmen. The majority of these were master's programmes and all education was given either by the University of Gothenburg or by Chalmers.

In 2009, the IT University business transferred also organizationally to the two departments that already were responsible for the educations, the Department of Applied IT (established in 2005) and the Department of Computer and Information Technology. The IT Faculty was formed and the Department of Applied IT became a department in the same respect as the other departments at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, with the exception that it was one of the very few departments that were integrated between the two universities. In 2017, due to Chalmers' reorganization, the Department of Applied IT left Chalmers and became a department solely belonging to University of Gothenburg.
