About Thomas Rosén

I am a Slavist and Balkanologist. My research has one historical and one contemporary branch:

Historical research

I carry out research in the field of historical sociolinguistics, in which I investigate the development of the Russian language in the 1990s and the position of Russian in Sweden in the period 1721–1945. I am particularly interested in questions related to the role of the written language in society and literacy.

Contemporary research

I research various aspects of the language situation in contemporary Ukraine, including language shifts and the Ukrainian authorities’ communications with citizens.

I am currently a senior lecturer in Ukrainian and Russian. I was previously a senior lecturer in Russian, Ukrainian, Albanian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian at Uppsala University and Stockholm University.

Together with Dr Alla Bidniuk, Lutsk, I run the Ukrainian-Swedish-Georgian Online Dictionary Project , funded by the Swedish Institute.
