About Nawi Ng

MD, MPH, PhD. Prof. Nawi Ng is a Professor of Global Health at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Institution of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. He is a medical doctor and epidemiologist by training and leads the Global and Public Health research group at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Gothenburg.

Prof. Ng previously worked at Umeå University in Sweden, where he served as a Senior Lecturer (2007–2014) and Professor of Epidemiology and Global Health (2015–2019). He was also a Visiting Professor of Epidemiology and Global Health from 2019 to April 2024.

Research area

His research focuses on inequalities in non-communicable diseases and their risk factors, risk behavior estimation and behavioral changes, population aging, disability and quality of life among older people, and unmet healthcare and social care needs, along with financial protection in Sweden and low- and middle-income countries.

Prof. Ng leads several research projects, including: (i) unmet healthcare and social care needs; (ii) poverty and healthcare utilization in Cambodia; (iii) a multilevel intersectional study of communities’ vulnerability and public health institutions’ capacity to cope with COVID-19; and (iv) the development of digital coaching for sustainable behavior changes and health promotion in Sweden (STAR-C). He also serves as a Co-Principal Investigator on a project at Umeå University focused on social capital for the planning and design of sustainable neighborhoods in Sweden.

He has published 167 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, including in The Lancet, International Journal of Epidemiology, Bulletin of the WHO, European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, Innovation in Aging, and BMC Geriatrics. He has an H-index of 52.

Prof. Ng has held editorial roles as the Managing Editor (2007–2014) and Chief Editor (2015–2018) of the Global Health Action open-access journal. He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Group of SEACO—Southeast Asia Community Observatory (2014–2019) and has served on the Scientific Advisory Group for Indonesia's Sleman Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) since 2016 and the KAHER HDSS in India since 2023.

Prof. Nawi Ng has supervised thirteen Ph.D. students to completion and is currently supervising ten ongoing Ph.D. candidates.
