About Björn Billing

Research areas: environmental history, ecocriticism, early modern polar history, visual culture, the Anthropocene, dinosaurs, and the history of paleontology.

Since autumn 2023, I have been studying Arctic expeditions from approximately 1550 to 1820, with a particular focus on perceptions of the Arctic landscape.

These studies are connected to my long-standing interest in aesthetics and cultural history, an orientation reflected, for example, in my book on Rousseau and eighteenth-century conceptions of nature: Utsikt från en bergstopp: Jean-Jacques Rousseau och naturen (Ellerströms, 2017).

Interdisciplinarity and collaboration have been guiding principles throughout my academic career, in both research and teaching. I regularly collaborate with the Artistic Faculty and with external partners such as the Gothenburg Natural History Museum and the Gothenburg Museum of Art.

My administrative assignments include Director of Studies in the History of Ideas and Science, and Assistant Head of Department for Education, at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion.
