Application for the Master's Programme in European Studies (MAES)
Assessment of qualifications for applying.
Selection
If there are more applicants than available places, selection is based on the applicants’ merit scores, which are generated through an overall assessment of the following:
- CV (maximum 2 pages) providing an overview of your academic qualifications as well as experience from organizational and/or professional life, including any certificates of employment. Your CV must be written in English.
- Statement of intent. Applicants who have not uploaded a Statement of intent will automatically receive a merit score of 0. Your Statement of intent must be written in English.
The Statement of intent and CV must be uploaded to antagning.se no later than 2 February (if the application deadline is 15 January) and 4 May (if the application deadline is 15 April). The dates may vary slightly; see the exact dates at Universityadmissions.se - Apply to Swedish universities.
The assessment is carried out by subject specialists at the University of Gothenburg. Based on this assessment, eligible applicants will be assigned a merit score and ranked accordingly. Applicants with at least 60 credits (ECTS) in European Studies will be given a higher merit score.
Statement of Intent
Please use the template for the Statement of intent provided below. Note that no changes can be made to the template and that space is limited. The Statement of intent must answer the questions below, be well structured, and be written in clear and concise language:
- What specifically in the programme’s structure and content has made you interested, and why?
- How have your previous experiences (both academic and non-academic) laid the foundation for your interest in the issues addressed in the programme?
- How have these experiences prepared you for the programme?
- Since individual writing and qualified analysis are cornerstones of the programme, what practical experience do you have of individual writing and analytical work using social science methods?
Based on the CV and Statement of intent, the applicant’s academic qualifications (e.g., courses and combinations of courses from previous education), relevant professional experience, and other merits (e.g,. internships, exchange studies, association activities, participation in conferences and student activities in international and European organizations), as well as language proficiency, will be assessed.
All submitted texts must be written by the applicant and not by someone else or generated by AI. It is permitted to use AI to check spelling and grammar.
