Published

On the National Day, the Swedish Royal Court announced this year’s awarding of medals. Among the recipients is Professor Staffan I. Lindberg.

In a press release on June 6, 2023, the Swedish Royal Court announced who will be awarded His Majesty The King’s Medal for special merits and the Litteris et Artibus medal for outstanding artistic contributions mainly in music, stage production and literature.

Political scientist Staffan I. Lindberg receives H.M. The King's Medal of the 8th size in the ribbon of the Order of Seraphim for significant contributions in the field of political science research. Among other things, he is the founder and director of the Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) at the University of Gothenburg, an institute that measures and analyses democracy in all countries of the world.

“Above all, I feel very honoured, but it is also a very important recognition of the V-Dem institute and the importance of the entire V-Dem project in a period of historical decline for democracy in the world”.

V-Dem's latest Democracy Report from March this year shows that 72 percent of the world's population, 5.7 billion people, live under authoritarian rule and that the world has not been more undemocratic in 35 years.

The Medal Awarding Ceremony takes place at The Royal Castle on Tuesday 13 June, the Swedish Royal Court writes in its press release.
