New interdisciplinary master courses

The University of Gothenburg offers two new interdisciplinary master courses dealing with the relationship between sea and society, starting this autumn. The aim is to attract not only students with a bachelor in natural science, but also in subjects such as economics, law or social sciences.
- These interdisciplinary courses are unique, and aimed at students that, for example, is training for a career in the marine or maritime industry, at marine authorities or in consultancy companies involved in marine environmental business, says course coordinator Per-Olav Moksnes.

The courses will be a part of the new interdisciplinary Master´s programme in Sea and Society, planning to start in 2019. However, already this autumn, students will be able to take two 15-credit courses. The first one, The sea and society relationship; historical perspectives, present status and future challenges, aims to give a basic understanding of how the relationship between the sea and the human society from prehistorical times and up to today has changed, and what threats and challenges the future brings.

The second course, Bluegreen economy and sustainable use of marine resources, will give a broad understanding for the critical balance between economy and use, on the one hand, and ecosystem sustainability on the other hand, of marine and maritime activities of major importance for the society. Furthermore, the students will get an introduction to how marine and maritime resources are owned and regulated at national, regional and global level.

Both courses will be open for Swedish as well as international students, and will be given in English.
