The award was presented during the China Dendro Conference, which brought together over 400 participants at Xi'an JiaoTong University in Xi'an, China. This year's conference was held in April and was the eighth in a row.

Hans Linderholm has collaborated with several research groups in China over the past 20 years, especially in his role as deputy director of the Sino-Swedish Center for Tree-Ring Research. This is a joint research center between the University of Gothenburg and the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Hans Linderholm's research group “Gothenburg University Laboratory for Dendrochronology” (GULD) specializes in tree-ring research, so-called dendrochronology. The focus of the research conducted within GULD is climate variations during the late Holocene, i.e. the ongoing geological period that began about 11,700 years ago. The research group studies, among other things, the impact of climate variations on forest ecosystems and humans.
