Five questions for Lars Ny, Professor of Oncology and newly appointed chairman of the research council for Sahlgrenska Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

What responsibilities come with being the chair of the Research Council of the SCCC?
“As chair, my role is to ensure the research council effectively drives strategic research initiatives within the Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This involves tasks like organizing and leading the council’s meetings and overseeing various activities.”

How should research integrate into the operations of a cancer center?
“Research plays a vital and clear role in developing and evaluating new methods and treatments for future cancer care. This means all staff members should actively participate in this effort, and we’re also involving patients and their families more than ever before.”

I’m eager to be involved and work to ensure we do this as well as possible by sharing our knowledge and gaining insights from others

What steps are being taken to enhance collaboration between the academy and the hospital in research?
“We’re currently restructuring to integrate research more seamlessly into our processes. An important symbolic example is the groundbreaking for Sahlgrenska Life. It will be completed in just over five years, but we are already intensifying our efforts to simplify and enhance collaboration by increasing the interaction between the university’s medical researchers and the hospital’s cancer researchers, for instance, through the initiation of various research networks.”

What do you see as the most important issue in European cancer research today?
“The EU’s EU4Health program outlines key areas in cancer care that require research, including prevention, accessibility, crisis preparedness, and patient benefit. The growing importance of health data access and digital healthcare transformation are also crucial to advancing our research.”

What are you most looking forward to in your new assignment?
“The Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s role as a Comprehensive Cancer Centre not only elevates its status locally and nationally but also on an international scale. I’m eager to be involved and work to ensure we do this as well as possible by sharing our knowledge and gaining insights from others.”
