Hazardous chemicals in plastic packaging

What chemicals are in plastic packaging? What is their toxicity, and which are the most concerning? The Hazardous Chemicals in Plastic Packaging project set out to identify this.

The final workshop of the research project on Hazardous Chemicals in Plastic Packaging took place on the 12th of September at the Dome of Vision in Gothenburg. As part of this project FRAM researchers Thomas Backhaus and Pedro Inostrosa have, in collaboration with Bethanie Carney Almroth (also at the University of Gothenburg), investigated the environmental effects of the plastic softener benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP). In another part of the project, FRAM researcher Daniel Slunge, in collaboration with Dr Leo Trasande at New York School of Medicine, investigated the cost of substituting phthalates with other plastic softeners.
