Shiyao Sun
Bio: Shiyao Sun is a Chinese jewelry artist currently studying for a master's degree at HDK-Valand, Gothenburg, Sweden. She has both solid silversmith skills and versatile artistic expression language. Her work has been exhibited in China, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Shiyao's interest is driven by the relationship between the jewelry and the wearer, especially the physical interaction between the jewelry and the body regarding daily wearing. Her study project explores how wearing or not wearing jewelry performs as a social action and choice that constructs individual identity and what the social, political, cultural, and psychological factors it reflects.

Talk: My project focuses on the physical interactions between jewelry and its wearer. It aims to study and express the sensory and bodily experiences of jewelry-wearing on a daily basis. The project approaches this goal from two perspectives: social interviews associated with participatory activities and material-based artistic creation. The interview collects cases of people’s opinions and feelings about wearing or not wearing jewelry; the following participatory activity tests how their idea of jewelry wearing changes with time. In the studio practice, mixed-material objects are created to visualize the body parts used to facilitate jewelry, zoom in, and enlarge the spots covered by bling and shining jewelry, especially the bodily changes that happened over time. The project aims to catch the audience’s attention to the often-neglected action of jewelry wearing and raise their awareness of jewelry wearing to the same level as jewelry itself.

Lotta Snijder

Lotta is the co-founder of SAW - exhibition space and studio.

Talk: Lotta’s jewelry playfully reflects the inside of our bodies. Organs, when taken out of their context, become objects, stripped-down versions of reality.
