About Mattias Rost

Mattias Rost is an Associate Professor in Interaction Design at the University of Gothenburg and Head of Division of CLIC - Cognitive science, Learning and IT, Interaction design, and Communication - at the Department of Applied IT. He explores the relationship between humans and technology, and how digital systems — from mobile phones to AI — shape attention, creativity, and understanding of the world.

From learning to code at age six to designing new technologies as a researcher, he has always explored technology by building with it. He thinks about the present and future through code, using design and experimentation to understand how technology transforms everyday life.

Mattias’s path has moved between technology, design, and research. After earning a Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, he completed a PhD in Human–Computer Interaction at Stockholm University, conducted at the Mobile Life Centre. He then spent several years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow before working in industry as a digital strategist at Iteam. These experiences continue to shape how he thinks about technology as both a technical and cultural practice.

He currently follows two lines of research. The first investigates our relationship with everyday technology, especially the smartphone, and why it is often viewed as problematic. The second explores the potential of modern AI, in particular large language models, for reimagining how people work with computers. Through the concept of LLM-mediated computing, he studies how computers can become expressive, creative partners for everyday users.

By combining technical knowledge with a human-centred perspective, Mattias aims to understand not just where technology is headed but what forms of thought, creativity, and connection it can enable.
