About Jonas Simonson

Jonas Simonson is Professor of Musical Performance at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg. Since 2001 he has primarily been involved in the Program for Contemporary Traditions in Music (formerly the World Music programme), where he served as programme director until 2020. He teaches ensemble, music theory and individual instrumental instruction, among other subjects. In recent years he has been actively engaged in developing feedback methods for artistic education and is a certified facilitator of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process, which he frequently incorporates into his teaching.

Previously he has taught flute and ensemble at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Ingesund School of Music, Malmö Academy of Music, the Stockholm Institute of Music Education, and the Danish National Academy of Music.

Alongside his academic work, Jonas Simonson is active as a freelance musician and composer. He is regarded as one of Sweden’s most innovative flute players within folk and world music. For more than four decades he has toured internationally and has been an influential figure in the development of contemporary Swedish folk music. His playing is featured on numerous recordings and is known for its distinctive, rhythmically vibrant and personal style.

He currently performs with Groupa, Tuultenpesä, and Marine/Simonson/Wiskari, and has previously worked with ensembles such as Den Fule, Bäsk, Kapell Frisell, Crane Dance Trio, Zephyr, Jormin/Nelson/Simonson and the Vocal Ensemble Amanda.
