About Erik Smedler

Background

I am a resident physician in psychiatry at Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) and researcher at Gothenburg University (GU). Prior to that, I did my MD-PhD at Karolinska Institutet and MSc in engineering physics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. My thesis was focused on neural networks and calcium signaling. I did my postdoc in the group of Mikael Landén at GU 2017-2019 and medical internship at SU.

Resarch interests

My research is focused on bipolar disorder, with emphasis on neural development. My line of research is on how disturbances in the development of neural networks lead to manifest psychiatric illness, with focus on the calcium channel gene CACNA1C. At the moment, we are developing IPS cell-based models of bipolar patients in conjunction with clinical data from patients.

Students

I am co-supervisor of the PhD students Anniella Isgren and Andreas Göteson as well as main supervisor for the medical students Johanna Kleppe and Sohaib Hattab. During the spring of 2019 supervised the master thesis of Ali Hattabs.

Funding

My research is funded by: ALF, Magnus Bergvall's foundation, Åhlén-foundation, Fredrik och Ingrid Thuring's foundation, Göteborgs läkaresällskap, Längmanska Kulturfonden, Märta Lundqvist's foundation, Wilhelm och Martina Lundgrens Vetenskapsfond, SUs foundations och Konrad och Helfrid Johansson's foundation.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested in collaborations or thesis projects. There are continuously openings for both experimental and theoretical projects.
