About Markus Bergström

I have been working as a design lecturer at HDK–Valand since 2014, where I focus on eco-social issues related to living environments and domesticity. Prior to this, I led a design studio in London, primarily working with public institutions, galleries, and museums.

I have extensive teaching experience in design and architecture, having taught at various institutions and programs in Sweden and abroad. I have developed courses across different curriculums and organized lecture series, often with a focus on social and material sustainability in relation to living conditions and dwelling. For several years, I have led a postgraduate course called Between Design and Architecture, working alongside a transdisciplinary team of students. Currently, I am the director of the MFA Design program at HDK–Valand, Gothenburg University.

As a co-founder of Kök, I am involved in a research project that examines critical planetary issues associated with everyday behaviour and habits in our homes. I am also an invited participant in Hidden Sites, a research project run by the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies at Gothenburg University. My previous projects include work on urban development for the Shodoshima Setouchi Triennale in Japan and for the Verksmidjan art space in Hjalteyri, Iceland. I have also conducted research on alternative housing concepts and technologies during my time in Auroville, India.
