About Markus Bergström
I am a lecturer and PhD candidate in design. My research investigates how artistic practices related to land maintenance and management reflect the organisational, political, and economic structures that govern land use in the public domain. My PhD project is situated across the undeveloped fringes of Gothenburg Municipality, within forests largely designated as land reserves awaiting development. It examines how both perceived and actual values in forestry are aestheticised within systems of public management.
I have taught in the design department since 2014, and previously served as Programme Manager for the MFA Design programme before starting a PhD. Among other commitments, I have led the courses Between Design and Architecture and Spatial Activism, and contributed to the redevelopment of both the BFA and MFA Design programmes. I studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art in London, and have a background in product and furniture design.
