African languages, Historical Linguistics of African languages
About
This course provides you with an introduction to comparative linguistic methods: ways to classify different types of linguistic variation and change, the effects of language contact, language change and language exchange, and the role of typology and universals play in explaining language change.
The focus will be on the importance of these issues for understanding the historical development of African languages, which do not normally benefit from the kind of written documentation that is available for most European languages.
